My children's American Grandmother

In 1977 I was a young Turkish bride, just moved to Santa Barbara, didn't speak one word of English, didn't have any family or friends. Then I met Mrs Baker. She wasn't only my teacher, she was my mentor for many years. When my daughter was born, she insisted that she was going to be her first babysitter. After we moved to San Diego we made sure we stop by and see her every time we're in town. And I really enjoyed the room (her museum), full of pictures and souvenirs her students gave her over the years. Just that room speaks volumes about how much love she gave to others and how much love she received. Today I am sad for this great loss. To honor her memory, we all should follow her steps and try to make a difference in this world. I will treasure all the memories. Semra Gurol.
